ABOUT

Why I paint...

My passion for art and design stems from my love of film and draughtsmanship. I watch films and read to escape from reality. Creating stories with a visual medium is important to me. I originally was inspired by the matte paintings in productions such by Studio Ghibli and other older animation productions that use traditional media for their backgrounds.

This is what led me to start painting landscapes. Rather than just working from photographs I like to go out and paint plein aire to experience the location, which I wholeheartedly believe affects the painting and the decisions I choose to make. I also like to imagine how characters would interact with the scene and how they would bring it to life

I enjoy the immediacy of gouache which is my main medium of choice, it only allows for a few passes which discourages me from overworking a picture and forces me to focus on the fundamental message of the landscape, I like to explore colour, especially how it can affect the mood of an image. I use my palette to create my own interpretation of the landscapes I see.
